I went to the Garden of Love,
and I saw what I never had seen:
a Chapel was built in the midst,
where I used to play on the green.
And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
and “Thou shalt not” writ over the door;
so I turned to the Garden of Love
that so many sweet flowers bore;
and I saw it was filled with graves,
and tomb-stones where flowers should be;
and Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
and binding with briars my joys and desires.

Il Giardino dell’Amore

Sono andato al Giardino dell’Amore,
e ho visto quello che non avevo visto mai:
una Cappella era costruita nel mezzo,
dove io giocavo sul prato.
E le porte di questa Cappella erano chiuse,
e “Tu non devi” scritto sulla porta;
così mi volsi verso il Giardino dell’Amore
che tanti dolci fiori portava;
e vidi che era pieno di tombe,
e pietre tombali dove dovevano essere i fiori;
e Preti in nere vesti andavano attorno,
e circondavano con rovi le mie gioie e i miei piaceri.
