Dear Mother, dear Mother, the Church is cold,
but the Ale-house is healthy and pleasant and warm;
besides I can tell where I am used well,
such usage in heaven will never do well.
But if at the Church they would give us some Ale
and a pleasant fire our souls to regale,
we’d sing and we’d pray all the live-long day,
nor ever once wish from the Church to stray.
Then the Parson might preach and drink and sing,
and we’d be as happy as birds in the spring;
and modest dame Lunch, who is always at Church,
would not have bandy children, nor fasting, nor birch.
And God, like a father rejoicing to see
his children as pleasant and happy as he,
would have no more quarrel with the Devil or the Barrel,
but kiss him and give both drink and apparel.

Il Piccolo Vagabondo

Cara Madre, cara Madre, la Chiesa è fredda,
ma la Taverna è sana e piacevole e calda;
e poi posso dire dove mi trattano bene,
un tale trattamento in cielo non andrà mai bene.
Ma se in Chiesa ci dessero un poco di Birra
e un dolce fuoco per scaldarci il cuore,
canteremmo e pregheremmo per tutto il giorno,
e non desidereremmo mai allontanarci dalla Chiesa.
Allora il Parroco potrebbe predicare e bere e cantare,
e saremmo felici come uccelli a primavera;
e la modesta signora Imbarazzo, che è sempre in Chiesa,
non avrebbe ragazzi curvi, né digiuno, né verghe.
E Dio, come un padre felice di vedere
i suoi bambini tranquilli e contenti come lui,
non dovrebbe più litigare con il Diavolo o il Barile,
ma lo bacerebbe e gli darebbe da bere e da vestire.
