I was one of the Highlands braves
among Bonnie Prince Charlie’s suite,
we swore loyalty to the lands of Scotia
we swore that English would never pass.
Why had we learn to believe in freedom?
Why had we learn to believe in justice?
Ev’ry free man in his own land,
For ev’ry man the songs of his own land.
How many men died in Culloden,
how many bodies wet of blood.
All the best of Scotland’s youth
fallen under the cruel English soldiers.
Many children lost their father
and many women lost their men.
The fine castles and the green plains
were full of tears, were full of morning.
Our flags were carried away
our guns were left behind us,
a cruel hunt to the man began
every Scottish man was a dead man.
Oh, damned Mother England
why have you given birth to children so wild?
Now we are strangers in our own land,
